Gryder Celebrates Opening Day At Golden Gate Fields With Four Wins

Jockey Aaron Gryder, who took leading rider honors at the 2011 summer meeting at Golden Gate Fields, got off to a great start at the track’s 2011 fall meeting by riding four winners Thursday.

The opening-day program featured eight races and Gryder went 4-for-6 on the afternoon.  After finishing second aboard Stormy Surge in the first race, Gryder scored with his next four mounts – Mickey’s House ($6.20) in the second race, Berry Valid ($2.80) in the third, Habit Forming ($7.00) in the fifth, and I’m Tops ($4.60) in the sixth.

Gryder completed a perfect “in-the-money” afternoon when he finished third in the sixth race aboard Big Bad Brown.

Gryder won the riding crown at the summer meeting by riding 29 winners during the 22-day session.  The 36-day fall meeting runs through Sunday, Dec. 18, and Gryder hopes to post a wire-to-wire victory over his colleagues in the race for champion jockey.

Steve Sherman, who won the training title at the summer meeting with 18 victories, was the only trainer to win two races on opening day.  Sherman took the second race with Mickey’s House and the eighth with Congress Woman Ivy ($5.20).

Racing continues at Golden Gate Fields Friday.  Post time is 12:45 p.m.
