Golden Gate Fields Kicks Off Six-Day Racing Week Today

A six-day racing week that will culminate with a big Labor Day card on Monday begins today at Golden Gate Fields.  Post time throughout the extended week is 12:45 p.m.

     Golden Gate Fields will host a “Family Day” celebration on Labor Day that will feature many will free activities for kids (pony rides, bounce houses, face painting and more) and live music by Busta Groove.  Fans attending the holiday program will receive a free picnic blanket.

     The feature race on Labor Day is the $50,000-added Rosie the Riveter Stakes, a
1 1/16-mile test for 2-year-old fillies.   Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who has been winning major stakes races across the country all summer long, plans to run Alec’s Moon and Indian Gracie in the Rosie the Riveter.  

     Perfect Curls and Tiz Blushing, two fillies that are nominated to the Rosie the Riveter, are both entered in Wednesday’s Generous Portion Stakes at Del Mar.  Clifford Delima trains both fillies and could scratch one of his charges from the Generous in order to participate in the Rosie the Riveter.

     Russell Baze, who took immediate command in the jockey standings by riding 13 winners during opening week of the summer meeting, will be at Del Mar Friday to ride Goggles McCoy in the $100,000 El Cajon Stakes, a one-mile race for 3-year-olds.  Trained by Steve Sherman, Goggles McCoy is undefeated in four career starts.

     GGF NOTES:  On-track attendance during opening week of the 2010 summer meeting was up 34 percent from the comparative opening week of 2009, when Golden Gate Fields opened a summer session on Aug. 12.  On-track handle was up two percent while total handle was up 17 percent….Leslie Mawing and Michael Martinez both rode six winners opening week and are tied for second in the jockey standings behind Baze…
William E. Morey, who saddled two winners last Sunday, holds a 6-5 lead over Sherman in the trainer standings….Sunday is “Dollar Day” with parking, admission, racing programs, hot dogs, beers and sodas all costing just a buck. Busta Groove will perform on the Trackside Stage.
