Gallant Son Comes Off The Bench To Win Sprint Feature

Gallant Son, making his first start since finishing third in the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile on April 27, charged from off the pace to win the $34,717 sprint feature at Golden Gate Fields Sunday.

Ridden by Isaias Enriquez, Gallant Son collared Moonshine Bay in midstretch and then outran his rival to the wire to win by a neck.  Moonshine Bay, with Russell Baze aboard, took second by a nose over fast-closing Administer and jockey Leslie Mawing.

Gallant Son, trained by Frank Lucarelli, completed six furlongs in a fast 1:09.15 and paid $7.60 as the 5-2 second choice in the betting behind 9-5 favorite Moonshine Bay.
Gallant Son has two wins and a second in three tries racing six furlongs on Golden Gate Fields’ synthetic Tapeta surface.

Owned by Randall and Rossi LLC, Gallant Son has nine victories, five seconds and five thirds in 36 career starts and $477,528 in earnings.  A 7-year-old horse by Malabar Gold, Gallant Son owns seven stakes victories.

Gallant Son’s victory completed a nice weekend for Enriquez and Lucarelli as they teamed to win Saturday’s $53,700 Miss America Stakes with Stormy Lucy.

Jockey Russell Baze, who will begin serving a five-day suspension when racing resumes Thursday at Golden Gate Fields, made sure he had some spending money for his forced vacation by riding three winners Sunday.  Baze won the second race with Chief Bernstein ($3.60), the fourth with Tiz Shocking ($4.00), and the fifth with Comin Easy ($4.20).
