Fu Peg He Rat Rallies for Win on GGF Turf

Fu Peg He Rat outran fellow closer Niner Genius through the final furlong to score a tight victory in the $24,600 turf feature at Golden Gate Fields Wednesday.

Fu Peg He Rat, ridden by Frank Alvarado, rallied along the inside while Niner Genius charged down the middle of the course under jockey David Lopez.  Fu Peg He Rat proved slightly faster, crossing the wire a neck in front of his rival.  Count It All Joy finished third.

Trained by Steve Specht, Fu Peg He Rat won the one-mile allowance contest in 1:38.73 and paid $6.00 as the 2-to-1 favorite in a field of seven.  The victory was the second on the Lakeside Turf Course for Fu Peg He Rat, who has finished in the money in all five of his starts on the local lawn.

Fu Peg He Rat, a 4-year-old colt by Fusaichi Pegasus, was bred in Kentucky by his owners, Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams.  Fu Peg He Rat earned $14,400 Wednesday and has made $134,230 in 27 career starts.

The Williames and Specht are hoping that Fu Peg He Rat’s victory is merely the start of a big week as they will be competing in the California Cup at Hollywood Park Saturday.   Specht and the Williames will start defending champion Lady Railrider in the $100,000 Cal Cup Matron and Luckarack in the $75,000 Cal Cup Juvenile.

Racing continues at Golden Gate Fields Thursday.  Post time is 12:45 p.m.
