Feature Race Victory Highlights Four-Win Day For Baze
A wire-to-wire victory aboard Pepnic in the $38,650 allowance feature highlighted a four-win Sunday afternoon for jockey Russell Baze at Golden Gate Fields.
Baze committed thievery in the one-mile race with Pepnic, who was allowed to loaf on the lead through fractions of 52.62 (half-mile) and 1:17.06 (six furlongs) en route to winning in 1:40.25.
Pepnic held off graded stakes-winner Hudson Landing through the final furlong to win by three-quarters of a length. Hudson Landing, making his first start since Nov. 8, took second by three-quarters of a length over Pepper Crown in a solid effort off the bench.
Pepnic was the 2-1 favorite and paid $6.20. Owned, trained and bred by Alex Paszkeicz, Pepnic earned $24,180 for his fifth victory in 23 career starts.
Baze also won the first race with If You Like It ($3.00), the third with Crushed It ($3.80), and the ninth with Barrel Knot ($9.20).
Sunday didn’t start well for Baze as he was given a three-day riding suspension (to be served April 6, 10-11) from the board of stewards for “failure to make a proper effort to maintain a straight course in the stretch and causing interference” aboard Gold Tie Please in the first race Saturday. Gold Tie Please ran third at odds of 1-5.
Jockey Leslie Mawing, riding in his final race at Golden Gate Fields’ winter/spring meeting, won the sixth race with Lucy Wiggles ($6.40). Mawing and Isaias Enriquez are heading to Auburn, Washington, for the 2014 Emerald Downs meeting that begins
Thanks to Elaine’s Tenancity ($69.60), who scored a 33-1 shocker in the fifth race, there will be a carryover of $40,009 in the Pick Six when racing resumes Thursday at Golden Gate Fields. Post time is 12:45 p.m.
