Fall Meeting Concludes Sunday With ‘Dollar Day’ Card
Golden Gate Fields will wrap up its fall meeting Sunday with a nine-race “Dollar Day” card. Post time for the finale is 12:45 p.m. and general parking, general admission, programs, beers, hot dogs and sodas are just $1 each.
The feature race on closing day is the eighth race, a 1 1/16-mile allowance test on the turf. Pepnic, a 4-year-old colt who has won three of his last five starts, is the 5-2 morning line favorite.
Pepnic, trained by Alex Paszkeicz, is coming off a wire-to-wire victory in a one-mile race on Golden Gate Fields’ synthetic Tapeta racing surface on Nov. 23. Hall of Famer Russell Baze piloted Pepnic to the front-running score and he’ll be back aboard the California-bred Sunday.
The 3-1 second choice on the morning line is Rush In, who was beaten 2 1/4 lengths by Pepnic while running second in the Nov. 23 race. Rush In defeated Pepnic by 1 1/4 lengths when the two horses ran one-two in a 1 1/16-mile turf race on Nov. 1.
Hittheroadrunning, who finished third in both the Nov. 1 and Nov. 23 races, will try Pepnic and Rush In again Sunday. Hittheroadrunning is 8-1 on the morning line.
The field for Sunday’s main event, in post position order with riders and morning-line odds, is as follows: Pepnic, Baze, 5-2; Rush In, Dennis Carr, 3-1; Kumiva, Leslie Mawing, 8-1; Dreamy Kid, Kevin Krigger, 7-2; Welcome Home Ryan, Catalino Martinez, 20-1; Siberian Laughter, Ricardo Gonzalez, 20-1; Ashtar, Kyle Frey, 20-1; Hittheroadrunning, Inoel Beato, 8-1; and King Kelly, Juan Hernandez, 6-1.
