The Grade 3 $200,000 El Camino Real Derby will have its 30th running Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.  Below are profiles of the seven entrants.

Comma To The Top (6-to-5)

Is fourth in the Daily Racing Form’s national rankings of 3-year-olds…Has won five straight races, a streak that began at Golden Gate Fields on Oct. 1…Closed out 2010 with victories in the $100,000 Real Quiet Stakes, the Grade 3 $100,000 Generous Stakes, and the Grade 1 $750,000 CashCall Futurity…Lost the shoe on his right hind hoof  prior to the CashCall Futurity and a paddock mishap – the first blacksmith on the scene was injured in the process of replacing it – resulted in the race being delayed nearly 30 minutes…Has earned $551,600 – not bad for a horse whose sire, Bwana Charlie, stands for $2,500…Was purchased as a 2-year-old for $22,000 by trainer Peter Miller… Is
2-for-2 on Golden Gate Fields’ synthetic Tapeta racing surface, the victories coming in six-furlong sprints….Is owned in partnership by Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum, and Kevin Tsujihara.

Silver Medallion (5-to-2)

Won the $79,950 Eddie Logan Stakes on the turf at Santa Anita in his first start for trainer Steve Asmussen, who has trained the Horse of the Year three of the past four years (Curlin 2007-2008, Rachel Alexandra 2009)…Joined the Asmussen barn in the fall…Will be the first horse from the Asmussen stable to race at Golden Gate Fields….Is a Kentucky-bred colt by Badge of Silver…Was purchased as a yearling for $150,000…Made his career debut at Saratoga and scored a game victory in a 1 1/16-mile maiden allowance test on the grass…Will be racing on a synthetic racing surface for only the second time….Raced on Keeneland’s Polytrack surface in the Breeders Futurity and finished seventh in the Grade 1 feature...Is owned by Michael J. Ryan…Will be ridden by Russell Baze, who will be seeking his third straight El Camino Real Derby victory and the eighth of his career.

Positive Response (7-to-2)

Enters the El Camino Real Derby as Northern California’s top 3-year-old…Was purchased after his second career start for $75,000 by trainer William E. Morey and has earned $116,880 in four races for Morey and ownership partners Saul Gevertz, Roger Newman, and Ray Pagano….Is 3-for-4 with two stakes wins for Morey and Co….Won the $75,000 Gold Rush Stakes in wire-to-wire fashion and then proved he could win from off the pace in the $100,000 California Derby…Provided French jockey Julien Couton with the first stakes victory of his career when he romped home by six lengths in the Gold Rush....Began his racing career in Toronto and broke his maiden in his second start at Woodbine…Is a Florida-bred son of Pomeroy.

Jakesam (8-to-1)

Finished second in the California Derby, beaten 2 3/4 lengths by Positive Response…Ran a big race in the Cal Derby as he vied for the lead through fast early fractions and still had enough left to hold the place spot…Is 1-for-2 on Golden Gate Fields’ Tapeta surface as he crushed five rivals in a one-mile starter allowance race prior to the California Derby…Was favored over Comma to the Top and seven others in the Real Quiet Stakes but ran a disappointing fifth in the feature….Is a Kentucky-bred son of Smoke Glacken…Was purchased as a yearling for $70,000…Is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, who has saddled a record five El Camino Real Derby winners…Is owned by Bourque Goldstein Thoroughbreds LLC…Will be ridden by Frank Alvarado, who won the 2000 El Camino Real Derby with Remember Sheikh.

Anthony’s Cross (SCRATCHED)

Made his West Coast debut in the Grade 3 $100,000 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita and finished third, beaten 9 1/4 lengths by the highly-regarded winner Tapizar….Broke his maiden in a 1 1/16-mile maiden allowance race at Churchill Downs and in doing so defeated Tapizar (who finished fourth in the race) by five lengths…Was purchased as a yearling for $300,000…Is by Indian Charlie and out of the Unbridled mare Screening… Was bred in Pennsylvania and is owned by A D K Racing…Is trained by Eoin Harty, who captured the 2008 Santa Anita Derby and 2008 Travers Stakes with Colonel John.

Bluegrass Reward (15-to-1)

Finished third in the California Derby at odds of 30-to-1…Was beaten 3 3/4 lengths by winner Positive Response and one length by runner-up Jakesam….Ran fourth at odds of 80-to-1 in the Angel Island Stakes…Is owned by Nick Alexander and trained by Steve Miyadi, who in 1990 sent out Music Prospector to a fourth-place finish in the Preakness Stakes…Was bred in California by his owner.

Formula Gold (30-to-1)

Hopes to go from maiden winner to stakes winner in one race…Was very game breaking his maiden in a one-mile race at Golden Gate Fields, digging in through the final furlong to prevail by a head…Has finished in the money in his last four starts…Was bred in California by his owner, Brett Mason, and is trained by Brett’s father, Lloyd, who has won with 30 percent of his starters (8-for-27) at the 2010-2011 Golden Gate Fields meeting.
