Dice Flavor Eighth In UAE Derby; Nina’s Dragon 12th In Louisiana Derby
Dice Flavor and Nina’s Dragon, who ran one-two in the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields on Feb. 16, both failed to menace in rich races Saturday as Dice Flavor ran eighth in the $2 million UAE Derby at Meydan Race Course in Dubai and Nina’s Dragon ran 12th in the $1 million Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds Race Track in New Orleans.
Dice Flavor rallied from eighth in a field of nine when he won the El Camino Real Derby by 3 3/4 lengths under jockey Jose Valdivia, Jr. Dice Flavor was near the back of the pack again in the UAE Derby but never mounted a rally.
“They just left us,” said Valdivia. “He wasn’t fast enough.”
The UAE Derby was won by Lines of Battle, who scored by 1 1/2 lengths over Elleval. Lines of Battle, trained by Adian O’Brien, is expected to make his next start in the Kentucky Derby on May 4 at Churchill Downs in Louisville.
Nina’s Dragon charged from seventh to get the place money in the El Camino Real Derby but was never a factor in the Louisiana Derby, which was won by favored Revolutionary. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Revolutionary is also headed to the Kentucky Derby.
Golden Gate Fields will celebrate Easter Sunday with a “Family Day” festival that will feature free games and entertainment for kids from noon to 4 p.m. Gates open at
10 a.m., post time is 12:45 p.m., and general parking, general admission, hot dogs, sodas and beers all cost just $1 each.
