Comma To The Top Tops Roster Of Nominees To El Camino Real Derby
Comma to the Top, one of the early favorites for the Kentucky Derby, tops a roster of 16 horses nominated to the $200,000 El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields.
The Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby is Northern California’s key race for 3-year-olds on the Triple Crown trail and will be run Saturday, Feb. 12. The 1 1/8-mile contest will be run on Golden Gate Fields’ synthetic Tapeta racing surface.
The owners of horses in this year’s El Camino Real Derby will have a shot at the new “Preakness 5.5” bonus, which will award any horse that wins the El Camino Real Derby, Santa Anita Derby and Preakness Stakes with a $5.5 million bonus – $5 million for the owners and $500,000 for the trainer.
The “Preakness 5.5” bonus was created by Golden Gate Fields’ parent company, MI Developments Inc., which also owns Santa Anita Park and Pimlico Race Course, the home of the Preakness Stakes.
Comma to the Top won his final five starts of 2010, a streak that was capped off by a victory in the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park. The gelding is 20-to-1 on the Kentucky Derby Future Book line at Wynn Las Vegas – the fifth-lowest odds among the more than 300 horses the property has listed.
Comma to the Top, ranked fourth among the nation’s 3-year-olds by Daily Racing Form, is scheduled to run in the El Camino Real Derby. Trained by Peter Miller, Comma to the Top will be ridden by Corey Nakatani.
The El Camino Real Derby nomination roster also includes Positive Response, winner of the Gold Rush Stakes and California Derby at Golden Gate Fields, and Silver Medallion, victor of the Eddie Logan Stakes at Santa Anita.
The following horses are nominated to the El Camino Real Derby: Anthony’s Cross, Bluegrass Reward, Classic Legacy, Comma to the Top, Formula Gold, Jakesam, Lilacs and Lace, Moment of Weakness, Northern Indy, Offlee Wild Boys, Positive Response, Silver Medallion, Ten Devils, Thirtyfirststreet, Twice the Appeal, and Wegner.
Entries for the El Camino Real Derby will be taken Wednesday morning.
