Champion 2-Year-Olds Of 2013 Made Debuts In Bay Area
She’s a Tiger and Shared Belief, who won Eclipse Awards Saturday night as the nation’s top 2-year-olds of 2013, both made their career debuts in Northern California.
She’s a Tiger, trained by Pleasanton native Jeff Bonde, made a spectacular first impression at the Alameda County Fair on June 22 when she rambled to a nine-length victory in a five-furlong maiden allowance race.
She’s a Tiger went on to win the Landaluce Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park and the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante, and she crossed the wire first by a nose in the Breeders’
Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita. She’s a Tiger was disqualified from the Breeders’ Cup win and placed second for brushing runner-up Ria Antonia, who was awarded first.
She’s a Tiger, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Tale of the Cat, had three wins and three seconds (all runner-up finishes were in graded stakes) in six starts in 2013 and earned $725,650. Voted the champion 2-year-old filly, She’s a Tiger is owned by Mark Dedomenico, Allen Aldrich, Lisa Hernandez, Staurt Downey and Phil Lebherz.
Shared Belief made his first start on Oct. 19 at Golden Gate Fields and drew off down the stretch to win a six-furlong maiden allowance race by seven lengths for trainer Jedd Josephson. Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer purchased Shared Belief after the big maiden tally and moved him to the Southern California division of his stable.
Shared Belief posted a 7 3/4-length victory in the Grade 3 Hollywood Prevue Stakes in his first start for Hollendorfer and his ownership partners, a group that includes radio-TV personality Jim Rome. Shared Belief then capped off a 3-for-3 juvenile campaign with a smashing 5 3/4-length victory in the Grade 1 $750,000 CashCall Futurity, the final graded stakes ever run at now defunct Betfair Hollywood Park.
A Kentucky-bred son of Candy Ride, Shared Belief earned $451,200 in his three races. Voted the champion 2-year-old male, Shared Belief is owned by Hollendorfer, Jungle Racing (Rome), Alex Solis II, Jason Litt, and KMN Racing.
The Eclipse Awards were announced at a banquet at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida.
