Cathy’s Crunches Triumphs In Golden Gate Debutante

Cathy’s Crunches, a well-traveled 2-year-old filly, made her first start at Golden Gate Fields Saturday and romped to a five-length victory in the $50,900 Golden Gate Debutante.

Cathy’s Crunches made her career debut at Calder Race Course in Florida on June 25 and rambled to a 9 1/2-length win in a $25,000 maiden-claiming event.  Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer purchased the filly after the big win and shipped her to his stable at Del Mar, where she promptly won a starter allowance race on July 28.

Cathy’s Crunches finished third in her second start at Del Mar on Aug. 18 and then traveled to Philadelphia Park and finished second in a rich allowance race on Oct. 2.  Hollendorfer sent Cathy’s Crunches to Golden Gate Fields following the race in Pennsylvania and she recorded four workouts over the Tapeta racing surface in preparation for the Golden Gate Debutante.

Cathy’s Crunches broke alertly in the six-furlong Golden Gate Debutante and took command immediately.  Uncontested on the front end, Cathy’s Crunches led by
1 1/2 lengths after an easy opening quarter-mile in 23.31 and by two lengths after a half-mile in 46.09.

Ridden by Chad Schvaneveldt, Cathy’s Crunches had plenty left for the stretch run and simply ran away from her four rivals, crossing the wire alone in 1:10.15.  Cathy’s Crunches paid $4.60 as the 6-to-5 favorite.

“Everything went great,” said Schvaneveldt.  “Once I got away with that [soft] first quarter I said, ‘game over boys, game over.’  She was very relaxed and when I asked her at the quarter pole she responded well.”

Cathy’s Crunches, owned in partnership by Hollendorfer and Mark DeDomenico, earned $30,000 for the victory.
