Cathy’s Crunches Big Favorite In $100,000 California Oaks

Cathy’s Crunches Big Favorite In $100,000 California Oaks

Cathy’s Crunches will be a heavy favorite to kick off her 3-year-old campaign with a victory in the $100,000 California Oaks at Golden Gate Fields Saturday.

The California Oaks, a 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-old fillies, highlights a special New Year’s Day card that offers great value for sports fans.  Post time is 12:45 p.m. and Golden Gate Fields is offering $1 general parking, $1 general admission, $1 beers, $1 hot dogs, and $1 sodas.

The California Oaks is the first leg of the new “Black-Eyed Susan 2.2” bonus program that will reward any filly that can win the California Oaks, Santa Anita Oaks, Gulfstream Park Oaks and Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at Pimlico Race Course with a $2.2 million payday ($2 million for the owners, $200,000 for the trainer).

The “Black-Eyed Susan 2.2” bonus was created by Golden Gate Fields’ parent company, MI Developments, Inc., which also owns Santa Anita, Gulfstream Park, and Pimlico.

Cathy’s Crunches has won three straight stakes races at Golden Gate Fields and is a   4-to-5 favorite on the morning line to win the California Oaks.   Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Cathy’s Crunches has five wins, a second and a third in seven career starts and $153,520 in earnings.

Cathy’s Cruches overcame serious traffic problems to win the one-mile Corte Madera Stakes in her most recent start on Dec. 4.  Trapped behind a wall of horses until midstretch, Cathy’s Crunches accelerated strongly once she found racing room and got up to defeat Lilacs and Lace and Game to Run by a half-length.

Lilacs and Lace and Game to Run dead-heated for second in the Corte Madera and both fillies will try Cathy’s Crunches again in the California Oaks.  Lilacs and Lace and Game to Run are 5-to-2 and 7-to-2, respectively, on the Oaks morning line.

The California Oaks field, in post position order with jockeys and morning-line odds, is as follows: Game to Run, Julien Couton rides at 116 pounds, 7-to-2; Seismic Speed,
Leslie Mawing, 116, 8-to-1; Cathy’s Crunches, Chad Schvaneveldt, 122, 4-to-5; Lilacs and Lace, Russell Baze, 116, 5-to-2; and Sister Glady Oh La, Hector Romero, 116,
15-to-1.

The California Oaks is the third race on a nine-race program and will be run at approximately 1:45 p.m.
