Cast Of Six Set To Run In $75,000 Gold Rush Stakes
The $75,000 Gold Rush Stakes, a steppingstone race to the 2012 California Derby, will be run Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.
The Gold Rush is a one-mile test for 2-year-olds and entries for the race were taken Wednesday morning. Six juveniles were signed up for the feature and the top performers in the race will likely be pointed for the $100,000 California Derby on Saturday, Jan. 14.
The Gold Rush field includes Cahill Chrome, who has won three straight races for longtime horse owner Kjell H. Qvale of San Francisco. Trained by Roger Hansen, Cahill Chrome broke his maiden in a 5 1/2-furlong sprint at the Big Fresno Fair and then won a pair of mile races at Golden Gate Fields.
Cahill Chrome has been in the exacta in his last five starts as he finished second in back-to-back races at Golden Gate Fields before launching his winning streak at the Big Fresno Fair. A gelded son of Cahill Road, Cahill Chrome has finished in the money in six of his eight career races.
Blacky the Bull, who finished eighth in the $500,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint at Churchill Downs, is also in the Gold Rush lineup. Blacky the Bull was bumped at the start of the Breeders’ Cup race and never threatened in the six-furlong contest.
Jeff Bonde trains Blacky the Bull, who was sent to the Breeders’ Cup after scoring a hard-fought victory in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden allowance race at Santa Anita. Blacky the Bull, a Kentucky-bred colt by Flashy Bull, has one win in four career starts.
Blacky the Bull will be ridden by jockey Kevin Krigger, who has won the last four stakes run at Golden Gate Fields.
Marshal Marini, who has placed in three stakes for trainer Clifford Delima, will try to shake the bridesmaid role in the Gold Rush. Marshal Marini most recently finished third in the six-furlong Golden Nugget Stakes under jockey Abel Cedillo, who will be back aboard the son of Marino Marini Saturday. Cedillo won three races at Golden Gate Fields last Sunday.
In post position order, the field for the Gold Rush Stakes is as follows: Blacky the Bull, Krigger rides; Squid, Frank Alvarado; Cahill Chrome, Juan Hernandez; Russian Greek, Inoel Beato; Lucky Culprit, Russell Baze; and Marshall Marini, Cedillo. All of the starters will carry 119 pounds.
Post time at Golden Gate Fields is 12:45 p.m. The Gold Rush Stakes is the third race on a nine-race card and will be run at approximately at 1:45 p.m.
