California Oaks Winner Lilacs and Lace Wins Grade 1 Ashland Stakes At Keeneland

Lilacs and Lace, who paid $6.80 when she won the California Oaks at Golden Gate Fields on Jan. 1, returned $99.40 to win Saturday when she scored a 48-to-1 shocker in the Grade 1 $400,000 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky.

Lilacs and Lace, bred in Kentucky by owners Judy Hicks and Kathryn Nikkel, won the California Oaks by 1 1/2 lengths while under the tutelage of Northern California trainer Duane Offield.

Hicks and Nikkel sold an interest in Lilacs and Lace to owner James Covello following the California Oaks and that resulted in the filly being moved to the barn of trainer John Terranova.  Lilacs and Lace finished a well-beaten fourth in the Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park in her first start for Terranova on March 26 but bounced back with a huge effort in the Ashland.

Ridden by Javier Castellano, Lilacs and Lace led from start to finish in the 1 1/16-mile Ashland and stopped the timer in 1:42.73 while defeating some of the top fillies in the nation.  Graded stakes-winner Wyomia finished second and multiple graded stakes-winner Kathmanblu finished third.

Lilacs and Lace earned $240,000 for the victory and established herself as a contender for the Kentucky Oaks on May 6 at Churchill Downs.

Krigger Has Riding Triple  --  Jockey Kevin Krigger rode three winners Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.  Krigger scored with Lil Miss Hottentot ($6.00) in the second race, See Zo Go ($9.80) in the seventh, and Lama Chant ($6.60) in the ninth.

Dollar Day Sunday at GGF  --   Post time Sunday at Golden Gate Fields is 12:45 p.m. and the track is offering $1 general parking, $1 general admission, $1 programs, $1 hot dogs, $1 beers, and $1 sodas.
