California Derby Nominations Due Thursday

Nominations for the $100,000 California Derby, which will be run Jan. 18 at Golden Gate Fields, are due Thursday.

Horsemen have until midnight to make their 3-year-olds eligible for the 1 1/16-mile California Derby, which serves as a prep for the Grade 3 $200,000 El Camino Real Derby.  An official Kentucky Derby prep, the 1 1/8-mile El Camino Real Derby will be run Feb. 15 at Golden Gate Fields.

Entries for the California Derby will be taken Jan. 15.  Horsemen that miss Thursday’s deadline can pay a supplemental nomination fee of $2,000 on entry day to get their horse into the starting gate for the California Derby.

The California Derby is the first stakes event of the winter/spring meeting and one of five $100,000 races on the stakes schedule.  The other $100,000 stakes are: the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile on April 26, the Grade 3 All American on May 26, the Campanile on May 31, and the Silky Sullivan on June 8.

The third week of action at the winter/spring meeting gets underway Thursday with a seven-race program.  Post time is 12:45 p.m.
