Cal Derby Champ Positive Response At Turfway Park For $100,000 Stakes
Positive Response, winner of the California Derby at Golden Gate Fields, is in Florence, Kentucky, to run in the $100,000 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes at Turfway Park Saturday.
“He arrived Tuesday and went to the track today,” said trainer William E. Morey Wednesday after watching Positive Response get a feel for the synthetic Polytrack racing surface at Turfway Park. “The surface is very similar to Golden Gate Fields’ (Tapeta) surface. That’s one of the reasons we chose this race.”
Positive Response is 3-for-5 on Tapeta with stakes victories in the Gold Rush and California Derby. Morey said Positive Response seems comfortable with his surroundings at Turfway Park and expects another big effort from the Florida-bred.
“He shipped great and is doing well here,” said Morey. “I’m going into the race very confident.”
Jockey Julien Couton, who guided Positive Response to his stakes victories and a third-place finish in the El Camino Real Derby, will be back aboard the gelding Saturday in Kentucky. Owned in partnership by Morey, Saul Gevertz, Roger Newman, and Ray Pagano, Positive Response has four wins and two thirds in seven career starts and $163,681 in earnings.
Entries for the John Battaglia, a 1 1/16-mile event for 3-year-olds, will be taken Thursday. The John Battaglia serves as a prep for Turfway Park’s marquee event for
3-year-olds, the $500,000 Vinery Spiral Stakes on March 26.
