Bonde’s Sway Away Will Break From Post Position Six In Preakness Stakes

     Sway Away, who will try to give Northern California trainer Jeff Bonde a victory in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course Saturday, will break from post position six in the 1 3/16-mile race for 3-year-olds.

    A capacity field of 14 runners will compete in the middle leg of thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown, which culminates with the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes on June 11 in New York.

     Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom is the 2-to-1 morning line favorite in the Preakness.  Dialed In is the second choice at 9-to-2 and Mucho Macho Man is the third choice at 6-to-1.  All of the other runners are double-digit longshots on the morning line, including Sway Away at 15-to-1.
 
     Sway Away finished second in the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar last summer and second in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita in February.  Owned by the Bay Area partnership of Batman Stable, Philip Lebherz, Cindy Olsen, Janet Sharp and Glen Wallace, Sway Away finished fourth in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park in his most recent outing on April 16.

     The field for the Preakness Stakes, in post position order with riders and morning-line odds, is as follows: Astrology, Mike Smith, 15-to-1; Norman Asbjornson, Julien Pimentel, 30-to-1; King Congie, Robbie Albarado, 20-to-1; Flashpoint, Cornelio Velasquez, 20-to-1; Sway Away, Garret Gomez, 15-to-1; Midnight Interlude, Martin Garcia, 15-to-1; Dance City, Ramon Dominguez, 12-to-1; Mucho Macho Man, Rajiv Maragh, 6-to-1; Dialed In, Julien Leparoux, 9-to-2; Animal Kingdom, John Velazquez,
2-to-1; Isn’t He Perfect, Edgar Prado, 30-to-1; Concealed Identity, Sheldon Russell,
30-to-1; and Mr. Commons, Victor Espinoza, 20-to-1.

     All gates at Golden Gate Fields open at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and the track will simulcast races three through 13 from Pimlico.  Post time for the third race is 8:43 a.m. Pacific Time.  Post time for the Preakness, the 12th race on the card, is 3:18 p.m.

     Golden Gate Fields will present a 10-race card of its own Saturday and post time for the first race is 11:45 a.m.
