Be Proud Is Even Money Favorite In California Oaks
Be Proud, runner-up in a pair of stakes in Southern California last year, will be heavily favored to get her first stakes victory Saturday in the $50,000 California Oaks at Golden Gate Fields.
Golden Gate Fields odds maker Steve Martinelli has made Be Proud an even-money favorite on the California Oaks morning line. Contributing to Be Proud’s low odds are her Hall of Fame connections – trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Russell Baze.
The California Oaks is a 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-old fillies and Be Proud heads a field of six. Be Proud enters the feature a record that features one win and four seconds in seven career starts and $87,650 in earnings.
Be Proud, a Kentucky-bred filly by Proud Citizen, ran second in the Phil D. Shepherd Stakes at Fairplex Park in September and second in the Sharp Cat Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park in November.
Be Proud was overmatched in her most recent race, the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet at Betfair Hollywood Park on Dec. 7. Be Proud raced in third for the first half of the
1 1/16-mile Starlet but then – perhaps realizing she was 30-1 – dropped out of contention and checked in seventh in the field of eight.
Be Proud raced without blinkers in the Starlet but the hood will be back on Saturday when she breaks from post position two.
The field for the California Oaks, in post position order and with riders and morning-line odds, is as follows: Kris Furillo, Juan Hernandez, 6-1; Be Proud, Baze, Even; Tiz Kissable, Dennis Carr, 4-1; Earthflight, Kyle Frey, 7-2; Josephine’s Moment, Francisco Duran, 6-1; and Adriatic Lass, Frank Alvarado, 20-1.
The California Oaks is the seventh event on a nine-race program that begins at
12:45 p.m. Post time for the California Oaks is 3:45 p.m.
