Baze To Ride Baffert Filly In California Oaks
Jockey Russell Baze will ride the Bob Baffert-trained filly Be Proud in the $50,000-added California Oaks at Golden Gate Fields Saturday.
The Oaks is a 1 1/16-mile test for 3-year-old fillies and the race attracted a field of six.
Be Proud will break from post position two when she makes her first start outside of Southern California.
Be Proud, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Proud Citizen, was purchased as a 2-year-old for $125,000. Be Proud has finished in the exacta in five of her seven starts, amassing a win and four seconds for owners Hal and Patti Earnhardt.
Be Proud ran second in both the seven-furlong Phil D. Shepherd Stakes at Fairplex Park and the one-mile Sharp Cat Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park last year. Be Proud made her final start of 2013 in the Hollywood Starlet and was overmatched in the
Grade 1 stakes, finishing seventh in a field of eight.
Be Proud has trained steadily for her 3-year-old debut and figures to find the competition she’ll face in the California Oaks more to her liking. Only one of her Oaks rivals, Kris Furillo, has competed in a U.S. stakes and she finished last in the Blue Norther on the turf at Santa Anita.
The California Oaks will mark the U.S. debut of British-bred Earthflight, who has three wins and a third in eight starts. Earthflight handily won a pair of races at Wolverhampton in November before coming to America and joining the Darrell Vienna barn at Santa Anita in December.
Trainer Tim McCanna will start a pair of fillies that recently won one-mile maiden allowance races at Golden Gate Fields – Tiz Kissable, who romped home by four lengths on Dec. 15, and Josephine’s Moment, who scored by a neck on Jan. 11.
Adriatic Lass, from the Sergio Ledezma barn, brings a two-race winning streak into the California Oaks. Adriatic Lass won a $20,000 maiden-claiming race on the turf on Dec. 8 and then captured a one-mile starter allowance race on Tapeta on Jan. 12.
The field for the California Oaks, in post position order and with riders, is as follows: Kris Furillo, Juan Hernandez; Be Proud, Baze; Tiz Kissable, Dennis Carr; Earthflight, Kyle Frey; Josephine’s Moment, Francisco Duran; and Adriatic Lass, Frank Alvarado.
The Oaks, the seventh event on a nine-race program that begins at 12:45 p.m., will be run at approximately at 3:45 p.m.
