Baze Leads Hernandez 18-17 With Three Days Remaining At Summer Meeting
Golden Gate Fields concludes its 19-day summer meeting this weekend with an eight-race card Friday, a nine-race program Saturday and a 10-race finale Sunday.
Post time is 1:15 p.m. each day and the final three cards feature large and competitive fields. Sixty-eight horses were entered for Friday’s program, 88 for Saturday, and 102 for Sunday.
There’s a tight race for leading rider honors as Russell Baze owns an 18-17 advantage over Juan Hernandez in the jockey standings. The top two are followed by Pedro Terrero (13 wins), Frank Alvarado (12), and Leslie Mawing (11).
Baze, who has 45 career riding championships at Golden Gate Fields, is favored to add No. 46 to his collection as he is scheduled to ride seven more horses than Hernandez during closing weekend.
Hernandez is skipping Saturday’s card at Golden Gate Fields to ride City by the Bay in the $100,000 Barretts Debutante Stakes at Fairplex Park in Pomona. City by the Bay, a 2-year-old filly trained by William E. Morey, posted an impressive 4 1/2-length victory under Hernandez in her career debut at Santa Rosa on July 31.
Baze, who missed two days of competition during opening weekend due to out-of-town riding engagements, has had 82 mounts at the summer meeting. Hernandez has had 79.
Baze is scheduled to ride seven horses Friday and five of his mounts are favored on the morning line. Hernandez has five scheduled mounts and none are favored on the line.
Jerry Hollendorfer, owner of 43 Golden Gate Fields training titles, tops the trainer standings with 11 victories. William E. Morey and Steve Sherman are tied for second with six wins each.
Sunday features a bargain for Bay Area sports fans as general parking, general admission, programs, beers, hot dogs and sodas will cost just $1 each
