Bay Area Trainers Seeking Upsets At California Cup

Northern California-based trainers Jeff Bonde, Jerry Hollendorfer, Ed Moger, Jr., and Steve Specht will all start horses in the California Cup at Santa Anita Saturday and most of them will be trying to score major upsets.

Hollendorfer will start the horse with the lowest morning-line odds – Rousing Storm, the 7-to-2 third choice in the $100,000 Bob Benoit Juvenile Stakes.  Specht’s entrant in the 1 1/16-mile race for 2-year-olds is Unveiled Heat, who is 20-to-1 on the line.

In the $100,000 Donald Valpredo Sprint Stakes, Moger will start 20-to-1 outsider Legal Separation and 6-to-1 Cost of Freedom, the fourth choice in the field.  Bonde will send out 20-to-1 shot Frumious in the 1 1/16-mile feature for 3-year-olds and up.

Bonde and Moger – according to the morning line – are really shooting for the moon in the $125,000 John Deere Distaff, a turf race for fillies and mares that is contested at “about” 6 1/2 furlongs down the hillside course.  Bonde will start out 50-to-1 Strawberry Tart and Moger will saddle 30-to-1 Evasive Charmer.  Specht also has an entrant in the Distaff – Antares World, who is 12-to-1.

Post time at Santa Anita Saturday is 1 p.m.  First post at Golden Gate Fields is 12:45 p.m.  Both tracks will present nine-race programs.
