Baffert’s Surfcup In $100,000 Silky Sullivan Stakes; Sherman Saddles Four Winners

     Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert may be skipping Saturday’s $1 million Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park but he’s not skipping Sunday’s $100,000 Silky Sullivan Stakes at Golden Gate Fields

     Baffert’s bay colt Surfcup, winner of the $300,000 Snow Chief Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park, heads of a field of seven in the Silky Sullivan, a one-mile turf race for 3-year-olds bred or sired in California.

     The Silky Sullivan is the featured sixth race on a nine-race program and will be run at approximately 3:15 p.m.  First post Sunday is 12:45 p.m. and the track is offering fans $1 general parking, $1 general admission, $1 programs, $1 beers, $1 hot dogs and $1 sodas.

     Surfcup, a son of Unusual Heat, has three wins and a third in six career starts and is
2-for-2 racing a mile on turf.  Owned and bred by Donald Dizney, Surfcup broke his maiden at first asking on the Hollywood Park lawn last November and captured an allowance race on the Santa Anita sod in March.

     Surfcup enters the Silky Sullivan off a very game performance in the Snow Chief, a
1 1/8-mile race run on Hollywood Park’s Cushion Track on April 27.  Surfcup raced just off the pace, surged to the lead in midstretch and then held off Fighting Hussar to win by a half-length in 1:50.80.

      Baffert has signed up fellow Hall of Famer Russell Baze to ride Surfcup in the Silky Sullivan.  Surfcup and Baze will break from post position six.

      The field for the Silky Sullivan, in post position order, is as follows: Alydidit, Abel Cedillo rides; Havoc, Dennis Carr; Heat Streaker, William Antongeorgi, III; Unusual Meeting, Frank Alvarado; Tebows Big Play, Juan Hernandez; Surfcup, Baze; and Gervinho, Victor Espinoza.  All of the starters will carry 120 pounds.

     Sherman Saddles Four Winners – Trainer Steve Sherman saddled four winners Thursday at Golden Gate Fields. 

      Sherman, who sent out six starters on the seven-race program, won the first race with Echo Zulu ($3.60), the fourth with Hollanita ($5.00), the sixth with Elizabeth A ($4.40), and the seventh with Oblivion ($4.60).  All four winners were favored in the betting.

     Sherman is third in the Golden Gate Fields trainer standings with 43 victories.
