Awesome Gem, Hudson Landing Head Berkeley Handicap Field
Awesome Gem, who leads all active thoroughbred racehorses in earnings with $2,761,370, and Hudson Landing, the San Francisco Mile champion, head a field of eight runners entered in the Grade 3 $100,000 Berkeley Handicap at Golden Gate Fields.
A 1 1/16-mile event for older horses, the Berkeley headlines a special Memorial Day racing program Monday. Memorial Day activities at Golden Gate Fields will include a free handicapping seminar, a sports bag giveaway, and a Family Day party.
Tom Quigley of Horseplayer Magazine and Golden Gate Fields announcer Michael Wrona will co-host the handicapping seminar, which will be held at 11 a.m. in the Paddock Pub (located on the track level near the winner’s circle).
Fans attending the races Monday with a paid admission will receive a free Golden Gate Fields sports bag. The Family Day party will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at the north end of the track and offer many free activities for kids, including pony rides, bounce houses and face painters.
The field for the Berkeley Handicap, in post position order, is as follows: Awesome Gem, Aaron Gryder rides at 120 pounds; Gallant Son, Russell Baze, 114; Hudson Landing, Juan Hernandez, 119; Positive Response, Julien Couton, 116; Anthony’s Cross, Kerwin John, 115; Bonfire Knight, Abel Cedillo, 112; Where’s The Remote, Alejandro Gomez, 112; and Michael the Man, Frank Alvarado, 111.
Monday’s nine-race holiday program will be preceded by nine-race programs on Saturday and Sunday.
Golden Gate Fields will host the “Wiener Nationals” on Saturday, with Dachshunds racing down the stretch between the thoroughbred races. Nine heats will be held and the winners will meet in a championship final.
Sunday will be Dollar Day at Golden Gate Fields with the track offering $1 general parking, $1 general admission, $1 programs, $1 hot dogs, $1 beers, and $1 sodas. The spring concert series continues with Mustache Harbor performing on the Trackside Stage.
