Alvarado Makes Triumphant Return To Saddle

Veteran jockey Frank Alvarado, who was too body sore to ride last Sunday, returned to the saddle Thursday at Golden Gate Fields and won with three of his five mounts.

Alvarado sustained a concussion and a bruised right shoulder in a spill last Saturday and took Sunday off to let his body recover.   The decision afforded Alvarado four straight days of rest and relaxation as there was no racing at Golden Gate Fields Monday through Wednesday.

Alvarado’s first mount Thursday was the Steve Specht-trained Billiejeanthisisit ($4.60), who came from off the pace to win the second race as the 6-5 favorite.  Alvarado and Specht came right back to win the third race with Sea Preacher ($6.80), who scored in front-running fashion as the 2-1 betting choice.

Alvarado finished fifth aboard 7-1 Life On Mars in the fourth race but bounced back to win the fifth race with 5-1 McCguyver ($12.00).   Alvarado sat out the sixth race and then finished seventh aboard 2-1 favorite Sun of Malibu in the seventh and final race.

The final week of racing at the winter/spring meeting continues Friday with an eight-race program.  Post time is 1:45 p.m.   Golden Gate Fields will present 10-race cards Saturday and Sunday and post time both days is 12:45 p.m.

The $50,000-added Albany Stakes, a five-furlong turf dash for 3-year-olds and up, and wiener dog races (presented between the thoroughbred events) will be featured Saturday.  Fans attending Sunday’s closing-day program will be treated to $1 specials – general parking, general admission, programs, beers, hot dogs and sodas cost just a buck each – and a free concert by the popular Bay Area band Azure Moon.
