Ain’t No Other Is Slight Favorite On Oakland Stakes Morning Line

The $50,000 Oakland Stakes will be run Saturday at Golden Gate Fields and one look at odds maker Steve Martinelli’s morning line reveals how well balanced the field is in the six-furlong feature.

Martinelli tabbed Ain’t No Other as the 2-1 favorite.  Gig Harbor is the second choice at 5-2 and he’s followed by Shudacudawudya at 3-1 and Shrug at 7-2.  Cardiffbythesea is 6-1 and the lone outsider in the field of six is Northern Causeway at 20-1.

Ain’t No Other is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and will be ridden by Russell Baze.  Ain’t No Other finished second in the $100,000 California Cup Sprint at Santa Anita and most recently won a six-furlong allowance race on the turf at Hollywood Park.

Gig Harbor is coming off a front-running victory over Shudacudawudya and Cardiffbythesea in a six-furlong allowance dash at Golden Gate Fields.  Trained by Steve Specht, Gig Harbor captured the Alcatraz Stakes last year for owner Daniel O’Neill of San Francisco.

Shudacudawudya, trained by Lloyd Mason, opened 2012 with a victory in the Albany Stakes at Golden Gate Fields.  A very consistent 5-year-old gelding, Shudacudawudya has nine wins, five seconds and two thirds in 20 career starts and $325,729 in earnings

Shrug won the Green Flash Handicap on the turf at Del Mar last summer for trainer Carla Gaines.  Cardiffbythesea, another entrant from the Mason barn, has won four of his seven career starts.  Northern Causeway, trained by Len Kasmerski, won the 2011 British Columbia Derby and has banked $250,072 in 21 starts.

The horses in the Oakland will line up, from the rail out, as follows: Gig Harbor, Frank Alvarado rides; Shrug, Dennis Carr; Ain’t No Other, Baze; Shudacudawudya, Julien Couton; Cardiffbythesea, Abel Cedillo; and Northern Causeway, William Antongeorgi, III.  All of the starters carry 123 pounds.

Post time Saturday is 12:45 p.m.  The Oakland is the second race on the nine-race program and will be run at 1:16 p.m.
