Afsana Posts Upset In Turf Feature

Afsana, a 9-1 shot ridden by Frank Alvarado, scored a front-running victory in the $30,855 turf feature at Golden Gate Fields Sunday.

Afsana dug in tenaciously down the stretch and just held off Lady of the Nile and jockey Dennis Carr to win the one-mile allowance race for 3-year-old fillies by a head in 1:39.34.  Stop Smiling, the 6-5 favorite ridden by Russell Baze, finished third.

Afsana, who had finished fourth in her only prior try on turf, paid $21.00 after securing her second victory in six career starts.  A Kentucky-bred daughter of Tiznow, Afsana is trained by Eoin Harty and owned by her breeder, Darley Stable.
