Acaffella Breaks Maiden In Angel Island Stakes At GGF

Making just the second start of his career, Acaffella took the 1 1/16-miles race for 2-year-olds in 1:45.54 and paid $4.80 after being bet down to 7-to-5, odds that made him the favorite in the field of seven. Moment of Weakness edged King Cola by a neck for second. Jockey Russell Baze rode Acaffella for Southern California-based trainer Richard Mandella and couldn’t have been more impressed by the son of Mr. Greeley. “What a nice colt,” said Baze. “He’s got a very good mind for a 2-year-old. Nothing bothers him and he’s very easy to ride. He just doesn’t do anything wrong.” Acaffella, who finished second when he made his debut in a one-mile turf race at Del Mar on Aug. 25, broke a tad slow in that race. Mandella asked Baze to get his charge away alertly in the Angel Island. “Richard just said to make sure he gets out of the gate good because he’s been a little slow breaking,” said Baze of the pre-race instructions he received over the phone. “He sure isn’t slow when you ask him to run.” Baze had Acaffella race in fifth through the first half of Angel Island and waited until the far turn before allowing his horse to launch his winning move. “He settled in real nice and we were in a good spot,” said Baze. “I was loaded (with horse) the whole way. When I chirped to him at the top of the stretch he took off and was gone.” Acaffella, owned by Spendthrift Farm LLC, earned $30,350 for the victory. Luckarack, who was coming off a back-to-back victories in sprint stakes on the fair circuit, finished fifth as the 2-to-1 second choice in the Angel Island. “He was flat today,” said jockey Frank Alvarado of Luckarack. “He didn’t have any kick. Maybe he needs to go back to three-quarters (of a mile).” Golden Gate Fields will present a nine-race card Sunday and also broadcast all the action from the first Sunday of the NFL season via its subscription to the NFL Sunday Ticket.
