6-Year-Old Gelding Old Ed Earns 10th Career Victory
They came at Old Ed from the inside and they came at him from the outside but they couldn’t get by the very game 6-year-old gelding Sunday at Golden Gate Fields.
Old Ed fought off Shadarockem, Hunter Creek, First Takin, and Baracho through the stretch to win the seventh race, a one-mile test for $4,000 claimers, by a head. Shadarockem took second by a half-length over Hunter Creek, who took third by a head over First Takin, who finished fourth by a head over Baracho in the blanket finish.
Old Ed, the even-money favorite under Russell Baze, paid $4.20 after collecting his 10th career victory. A Kentucky-bred son of Five Star Day, Old Ed has finished in the money in 18 of his 33 career starts.
Old Ed, trained by William E. Morey, was timed in 1:38.55. The veteran is owned by the partnership of Morey, Steve Hagen, and Cindy and Roger Newman.
Old Ed was the first of back-to-back winners for Morey, who also won the eighth race with Park Time Luck ($6.40). Old Ed was one of three winners ridden by Baze, who also won the third race with Anzisong ($3.20) and the ninth with To Be Devant ($2.60).
Racing will resume at Golden Gate Fields Wednesday. Post time is 12:45 p.m.
