23 Runners Nominated To Grade 3 $200,000 El Camino Real Derby

     Twenty-three runners have been nominated to the Grade 3 $200,000 El Camino Real Derby, a 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-olds that will be run Saturday, Feb. 18, at Golden Gate Fields.

     The El Camino Real Derby is Northern California’s most important race for horses with aspirations of reaching the Triple Crown events.  The race will be carried live on Comcast SportsNet California during its one-hour telecast (4 p.m. to 5 p.m.) from Golden Gate Fields.

     California Derby winner Russian Greek and California Oaks heroine Lady of Fifty head the roster of nominees for the 31st running of the El Camino Real Derby.  Both horses are scheduled to start for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who has saddled a record five El Camino Real Derby winners.

     Russian Greek has three wins in four career starts and will be seeking his third straight stakes victory.  Prior to winning the California Derby, Russian Greek captured the Gold Rush Stakes.   Jockey Aaron Gryder will ride Russian Greek in the El Camino Real Derby.

     Lady of Fifty has four victories in five career outings and has won three straight stakes  – the Golden Gate Debutante, the Corte Madera, and the California Oaks.  Hall of Famer Russell Baze will ride Lady of Fifty, who will try to become the first filly to win the El Camino Real Derby.

     The following horses are nominated to the El Camino Real Derby: All Squared Away, Basmati, Boat Trip, Cahill Chrome, Castaway, Coach Royal, Daddy Nose Best, Handsome Mike, Holy Candy, Howe Great, Lady of Fifty, Longview Drive, Lucky Chappy (IRE), Man Overboard, Our Boy Benjamin, Pepnic, Rockinarz Recruit, Russian Greek, Senor Rain, Tiz Point, Unusual Heatwave, Unveiled Heat, and Vibrato Jazz.

     Entries for the El Camino Real Derby will be taken Wednesday.
