2011 Cal Derby Champ Positive Response Looks To Bounce Back On Turf
Positive Response, the 2011 California Derby champion and five-time stakes winner, will try to bounce back from a pair of dull efforts when he faces four rivals in the $31,000 allowance feature at Golden Gate Fields Saturday.
Post time for the second day of racing at the 19-day summer meeting is 1:45 p.m. and Positive Response will compete in the fourth race, a one-mile turf test for 3-year-olds and up. Post time for the fourth race is 3:22 p.m.
Positive Response is a 6-year-old gelding who has earned $391,138 in 28 career starts. The Florida-bred won a pair of stakes in 2013 – the County of Alameda Handicap at Pleasanton and the Rolling Green at Golden Gate Fields – but has beaten just one horse in his two outings in 2014.
Idle since finishing last in a one-mile allowance race on the turf on June 15, Positive Response has recorded some solid works for Saturday’s race, including a six-furlong drill in
1:14 3/5 handily on Aug. 3.
Jockey Dennis Carr will ride Positive Response for trainer William E. Morey, who will also start recent acquisition Tiz Dynamic in Saturday’s feature. Russell Baze has the call on Tiz Dynamic, a 5-year-old gelding who has raced exclusively in Southern California.
The field for Saturday’s main event, in post position order, is as follows: Positive Response, Carr rides, 6-1 on the morning line; Tiz Dynamic, Baze, 7-5; Eagle Screams, Pedro Terrero, 4-1; Beast of Bourbon, Juan Hernandez, 2-1; and Minister Vivendi, Alejandro Gomez, 10-1. All of the starters will carry 118 pounds.
Cedillo’s Longshot Hat Trick -- Jockey Abel Cedillo celebrated opening day of the summer meeting with a riding hat trick Friday. Cedillo scored with three longshots – Boo Who Who ($16.00) in the first race, Sea Secret ($40.40) in the sixth, and Cara Has It ($24.40) in the seventh.
