SHARP MARC SPLASHES TO WIN
1 1/2 MILE MARATHON AT GGF
Golden Gate Fields presented a rare 1 1/2-mile race Sunday and it was the 5-year-old gelding Sharp Marc who proved strongest in the $48,368 marathon for
3-year-olds and up.
Sharp Marc moved up to contend for the lead on the final turn, took command from from Time to Honor at the top of the stretch and then held off Slew a Soldier to win by
three-quarters of a length. Steppin Charlie finished third.
Sharp Marc, trained by F. Bart Edwards, splashed home in 2:32.68 on a sloppy racetrack and paid $27.80 as the second largest price in a field of six. Owned by Richard A. Haggerty, Sharp Marc earned 27,885 for the win – his second victory in nine career starts.
Sharp Marc was ridden by Carlos Silva, who had a hat trick Sunday. In addition to Sharp Marc, Silva scored with Desert Affair ($21.20) in the sixth race and Mad Olympian ($12.00) in the ninth.
