NEVADA WORRIER WINS GOLDEN BEAR AT GGF
Nevada Worrier fought off a stubborn Devils Afleet through the stretch to win the $61,900 Golden Bear Stakes by a neck Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.
Nevada Worrier, ridden by Agapito Delgadillo and trained by Jerry Wallace, won the six-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds in 1:09.98 on Golden Gate Fields’ synthetic Tapeta racing surface. Devils Afleet took second by 3 1/4 lengths over Summer Haze.
Nevada Worrier, who was coming off fourth- and fifth-place finishes in stakes races
in Southern California, went off at odds of 5-to-1 in the Golden Bear and paid $12.80.
“This was a little easier than what he ran against down there,” said Wallace. “He got in a little trouble a couple of times down there. He runs the same race every time and if you can keep him out of trouble he has a good turn of foot. He likes synthetic tracks.”
Delgadillo said he thought he was going to win the Golden Bear by much more than a
neck.
“I thought I’d win easier because when I asked my horse, he moved like he was going to run off and win by 10 (lengths),” said Delgadillo. “The last sixteenth of a mile I was a little worried because the other horse was trying to come back. Thankfully, my horse dug in tough.”
Nevada Worrier is owned by Jerry Wallace, who bred the California-bred son of Lord Carson. The victory in the Golden Bear was worth $39,500 and increased Nevada Worrier’s earnings to $176,042.
