MOREY SADDLES FOUR WINNERS TO TAKE LEAD
IN TRAINER STANDINGS ON EVE OF CLOSING DAY
William E. Morey saddled four winners Saturday at Golden Gate Fields to open up a two-victory advantage in the trainer standings over perennial champion Jerry Hollendorfer heading into the final day of the 2008 spring season.
Morey enters the closing-day program of the 30-day meeting with a 25-23 lead over Hollendorfer, who has won 32 straight conditioning crowns at Golden Gate Fields and
37 in a row at Bay Meadows.
Steve Miyadi, who won Saturday’s Work The Crowd Stakes with Bellsblade, is third in the standings with 22 victories.
Hollendorfer, the leading trainer at every major meeting in Northern California since 1986, is scheduled to start four horses on Sunday’s 10-race program. Morey only has one entrant while Miyadi has four.
Hollendorfer’s scheduled starters are: Butterfly Belle (5-to-1 on the morning line) in the third race, My Lollipop (12-to-1) in the fifth, Mandate To Fly (12-to-1) in the seventh, and Alottadar (6-to-1) in the ninth. Morey’s lone starter is Ron Bob (15-to-1), who runs in the seventh.
Miyadi’s entrants are: Vicki’s Mandate (7-to-5) in the sixth race, Super Harmony
(8-to-1) and Yvett’s Pride (6-to-1) in the seventh, and Anziyan’s Song (3-to-1) in the ninth.
Post time Sunday is 1:05 p.m. and the track is offering $1 general admission,
$1 general parking, $1 programs, $1 hot dogs, $1 beers, $1 sodas, and live musical entertainment by the popular band Tainted Love.
Morey scored Saturday with Band of Thunder ($8.00) in the third race, Scrumpy ($4.60) in the sixth, Hoarseman ($16.60) in the ninth, and Seattle Delegate ($15.00) in the tenth.
BELLSBLADE WIRE-TO-WIRE -- Bellsblade, carrying jockey Catalino Martinez to his richest win in the U.S., scored a wire-to-wire victory in the $75,000 Work The Crowd Stakes for fillies and mares.
Bellsblade defeated 4-to-5 favorite Lightmyfirebaby by 2 1/2 lengths in the
one-mile turf contest and paid $7.00 after stopping the timer in 1:36.09.
“Steve (trainer Miyadi) said to go to the lead and don’t wait for anything,” said Martinez. “I was glad nobody went with us. She’s better on the lead. I’m very happy. This is my biggest win in the United States.”
Bellsblade, a 4-year-old filly owned and bred by Robert E. Reseigne, earned $45,000 for her first career stakes. A winner of four of her last five races, Bellsblade scored her first victory in a modest $12,500 maiden-claiming event at Bay Meadows on March 6.
