Son of Northern California training mainstay William J. Morey, Jr., he grew up at the racetrack, accompanying his father to the barn whenever possible.  Became licensed as an assistant trainer at age 19 and served as his father’s chief aid.

Ran the Northern California operation of the Morey racing stable for most of 1999 and 2000 while his father managed the career of millionaire Dixie Dot Com and other horses in Southern California.

Attended San Jose State and earned a degree in economics in eight semesters while working full time at the track with his father.
