Steve Miyadi

STEVE MIYADI

Born:  June 8, 1957, Los Angeles California

Sported a winning percentage of better than 30 percent four consecutive years (32.9 in 2006, 31.5 in 2005, 37.6 in 2004, and 33.3 in 2003).

Won a career high 145 races in 2006 and ranked 15th in the nation in victories.
  
Finished 27th in the nation in wins in 2007 when he saddled 129 winners.

Nearly upset Northern California training kingpin Jerry Hollendorfer at the 2008 Bay Meadows spring meeting but came up one victory short (55-54) while finishing second.

Tied for second with Jerry Hollendorfer at the 2008 Golden Gate Fields meeting, a season in which William E. Morey took the crown from Hollendorfer.  

Also finished tied for second at the 2006 spring meeting at Golden Gate Fields.

Was the third-leading trainer at the following Golden Gate Fields meetings: 2007-2008 winter, 2006-2007 winter, 2006 summer/fall, 2005 fall, and 2005 spring.  

Won with 15 of his 36 starters (an amazing 41.6 percent) at the 2005 spring meeting at Golden Gate Fields.

Won races at an incredible 42.3 percent clip during the 2004-2005 winter meeting at Golden Gate Fields, amassing 22 wins from 52 starters and finishing fourth in the standings.  

Started only 25 runners at the 2004 fall meeting at Bay Meadows but won with 10 of them (40.0 percent) and finished in a three-way tie for eighth place in the standings.

Began his training career in 1987 at Del Mar and notched his first win at the seaside track that year.

Recorded the biggest victory of his career at Del Mar in 1989 when he sent out Drag Race to win the Grade I Del Mar Futurity.

Has trained many stakes winners, including Music Prospector, who in 1990 captured the Santa Catalina Stakes at Santa Anita and ran fourth in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico.  In 1992, Music Prospector won Silky Sullivan and Kensington Handicaps at GGF.

Notched a pair of stakes wins in June 2008, taking the Work the Crowd at Golden Gate Fields with Bellsblade and the Everett Nevin at Pleasanton with Squallcreek. 

Won three stakes in Northern California in 2006, including the $100,000 Work The Crowd Handicap with Eleanor Rose.

Took the 2005 Miss America Handicap at Bay Meadows with First Draft and the 2005 Vallejo Stakes at Golden Gate Fields with Lunachick.

Has been based in the Bay Area since the early 1990s but had a two-year (2001-2002) hiatus in Japan.

First job on the racetrack was as a groom for trainer John Sullivan.  He went on to work for Mike Mitchell and became his stable foreman.
 
Is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara.
