ART SHERMAN

 

Ranked 12th in the nation in victories in 2004 with 152 wins, a career best.

Has ranked among the top five trainers at every major meeting in Northern California since 2000.

Has been the second-leading trainer at six Northern California meetings since 2001.  He took runner-up honors at the following four Bay Meadows meetings: 2005 winter/spring, 2004 fall, 2004 spring, and 2001 spring.  At Golden Gate Fields, he was second at the 2004-2005 winter meeting and the 2003-2004 season.

Reached a career milestone on Jan. 6, 2005, at Golden Gate Fields, when he saddled his  1,500th winner, Mountain Mustang, who took the sixth race.

Has trained many top stakes performers, including Lykatill Hil, who took the following  graded events: 1995 William P. Kyne Handicap, 1994 Del Mar Breeders’ Cup Handicap, and 1993 California Juvenile Stakes.

Conditioned graded stakes winners Lindsay Jean (winner of 2003 Brown Bess Handicap) and Perfec Travel (1988 Triple Bend Handicap).  Also trained stakes victors Presidio Heights, My Captain, Amanda’s Affair, Tahoe City, Lady Michele, Let Fly, King’s Bet, Jillyball, Haveasilverbullet, Easy Come Easy Go, Rickrack, Julietiquette, and Fancee Bargain. 

A former jockey, he took out his trainer's license in 1980.  Ranked among the top 10 trainers in Northern California on a yearly basis throughout the 1990s and carried the momentum into the new millennium.

Took out his jockey's license in 1957 at Hollywood Park and gained his first victory that year at Caliente.  Later rode in Florida and the Midwest before returning to Southern California in 1968 and then moving on to the Bay Area.

Retired from the saddle in 1978 and spent one year as assistant trainer for Paul Guidotti.  Went on to serve a brief stint as a racing official in Northern California before opting to open his own racing stable. 

Moved to Los Angeles with his parents as a youngster and went to work at the racetrack in 1953 for Rex Ellsworth. 

Accompanied the famed Swaps to the Kentucky Derby in 1955 and to Chicago for his storied match race with Nashua.

Is assisted by his two sons, Steve and Alan.  Alan was a jockey for several years.
